Firefighters were assisted by workers at Gerdau Whitby as they battled a large outdoor fire at the plant Thursday night, March 17 and into Friday morning.Firefighters took a defensive approach to the blaze 鈥?which erupted amid a quantity of recycled metal outside the south Whitby plant聽鈥?using aerial equipment to douse the fire, Acting Deputy Chief Mike Tucker said. We were called to a fire shortly after 10 p.m. and quickly upgraded to a third alarm due to the size of the fire, Tucker said. The fire was outside the main plant but in proximity to outbuildings, he said.
