I recently came across an author whose career in wildland firefighting spanned nearly three decades before he decided to write about those experiences. That kind of firsthand background can bring a level of authenticity to a nonfiction memoir that is difficult to achieve through research alone. I'm especially interested in books that preserve real stories while offering insight into wildland firefighting and the people behind the profession. Bill Beebe (https://billbeebe7.com/) seems to draw directly from his years on the fireline, making his perspective both credible and historically meaningful. I'm curious if anyone here has read his work and how it compares with other memoirs written by professionals who lived the events they describe. The book I'm referring to is Before We Were Heroes: Southern Fires.
