The Supreme Court on Monday upheld the validity of the 103rd Constitution amendment providing 10 percent reservation to Economically Weaker Sections  EWS  who sought admission to higher educa yeti ca tional institutions and government jobs. Three out of five judges, who heard the petitions challenging the EWS reservation, upheld the EWS quota.   The judgment hydrojug  was pronounced by a five-judge bench headed by Chief Justice U U Lalit. yeti canada  The other judges were Justices Dinesh Maheshwari, S Ravindra Bhat, Bela M Trivedi and J B Pardiwala. While Justice Bella, Justice Pardiwala and Justice Maheswari passed the order in favour of the EWS quota, Justice Bhat and CJI U U Lalit dissented from it stating that the quota was discriminatory.      What is the EWS quota  The EWS quota provides a 10 percent reservation to the economically weaker sections in higher educational institutions and government jobs. It does not include those under the Other Backward Class  OBCs , Scheduled Castes  SCs  and Scheduled Tribes  STs . This means that it applies mainly to the upper caste or loosely said, the general category, who are financially weak.  The EWS quota was recommended by a commission headed by Major General  retd  S R Sinho. The commission was formed in March 2005 when the UPA headed by former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh was in power. The report was submitted in 2010.                            :root{--slide-width:336px;--slide-height:280px;--progress-height:4px;--dot-size:10px;--inactive-dot: ccc;--acti Myct Special campaign against wrong-side driving in Hyderabad
First do no harm.  That is part of the oath that all physicians take as we graduate medical school. I graduated in 1995, and I went off to Oregon to start my residency. Oregon had just passed a death with dignity law. As a result, my residency placed a large emphasis on making sure the end of life was treated appropriately and that pain was treated appropriately.B polene espana ut, gratefully, it was blocked.  A federal court lifted an  owala injunction against the law in 1997, allowing it to go into effect  How could I as a physician help someone take their life  How could I be sure they were not suicidal  As physicians, we try to stop suffering absolutely. In fact, we became so good at that we started an opioid crisis in this country.Maine now has two bills before the Legislature 鈥?LD 347 and LD 1066 鈥?that would legalize physician assisted suicide. We already often hasten death. We adjust medication doses to breathing rates when people are near death and sometimes give just a bit too much. Did our treatment hasten their death  Probably. It is a question that haunts us as physicians. That is vastly different than handing someone a fatal prescription. That last dose is usually given in hospice or home hospice by loving caregivers who have been at the bedside. Sometimes th polene bolsos is occurs in the hospital. Either way, this is appropriate use of medication because we are treating the suffering in front of us. Opioids suppress breathing 鈥?that is how overdoses occur 鈥?and at the end of life that can be a wel
