City police stopped, questioned and frisked more than half a million people last year - a significant increase  kubki stanley in a practice that has drawn criticism from civil rights advocates who say the tactic singles out young minority men.The new data was in a report issued Thursday by the Center for Constitutional Rights, which sued the NYPD last year over the so-called stop-and-frisk policy. In April, attorneys for the civil rights group served the department with legal requests seeking data for the last decade. The report was based on that raw data, some of which has already been released by the New York Police Depart stanley cup ment.In 2008, a projected 543,982 people were stopped, based on figures available for half the year, compared with fewer than 400,000 in 2005, according to an analysis of data from the past three years. The center also says 80 percent of the people stopped are black and Hispanic, and they are more likely to have physical force used against them during a stop.        New York Police Department Deputy Commissioner for Publ stanley website ic Information Paul Browne said the number of minorities who were singled out under the policy is consistent with overall descriptions by race provided by victims and surviving witnesses of crime.Browne also said the assertions in the report are a restatement of unfounded accusations in the center s lawsuit.  If you ;ve ever wondered where the true home of sasquatch might be, then this visualization of sightings could help you track the mythical beast down.     Put together by Josh Stevens, a PhD candidate at Penn State, this viz shows 92 years of sasquatch sightings, and is based on data from the Bigfoot Field Researchers Organization. If you look at the map and suspect that sightings mirror population density鈥攁 fair assumption鈥攖hen Steve stanley thermos ns is one step ahead of you: Right away you can see that sightings are not evenly distributed. At first glance, it looks a lot like a map of population distribution. After all, you would expect sightings to be the most frequent in areas where there are a lot of people. But a bivariate view of the data shows a very different story. There are distinct regions where sightings are incredibly common, despite a very sparse population. On the other hand, in some of the most dense stanley cup ly populated areas sasquatch sightings are exceedingly rare. The second, bivariate map  stanley fr is the one on the left, where bright purple shows high sasquatch sightings/low population density, and light green points to high population density/low sassquatch sightings. So it   not driven by population density鈥攂ut it might be driven by the vegetation, terrain and, umm, enthusiasm for sasquatch sightings in those areas instead.
