She was born January 12, 1926, in Howland the daughter of Henry J. and Hazel Blake Hoyt.Mary Jane graduated from the University of Maine in 1946, she taught English at Ellsworth High School until her marriage to Oliver L. Tapley, who predeceased her in 1974. She resumed her teaching career in 1966 and retired in 1987 after more than 20 years teaching in the Eddington and Holden schools. In 1976, she married David P. Pierce Sr., a

Mary Jane was very involved with the community of Holden and served on the Holden Historical Society and the Holden Cemetery Committee.
