A Louisiana man shot by Lee Boyd Malvo before the criminal spree that terrorized the Washington, D.C., area in 2002 has received a letter of apology from the convicted sniper.John C. Gaeta, 58, of Albany, said Thursday that he s glad Malvo wrote him but remains skeptical about Malvo s intentions. I m glad he wrote the letter,  Gaeta said.  I do wonder, though, if he s truly sorry or if this is a part of stanley tumblers  him trying to get his sentence reduced. He knows that he should express remorse, so I question whether it i stanley polska s genuine and from the heart. Gaeta was shot in the neck Aug. 1, 2002, outside a mall near Baton Rouge, La. He has said that two black men approached him as he tried to change a tire. When he leaned down to pull out his spare, he noticed a shadow near the front of the truck.Last month, Malvo confess kubki stanley ed to Louisiana detectives that he shot Gaeta, but said he thought the man had died. The shooting was part of a spree by Malvo and John Allen Muhammad that left 10 people dead.        Muhammad was executed in Virginia in November for killing a man at a gas station. Malvo was sentenced to life in prison for one of the killings. The short, brief letter Gaeta received was dated Feb. 21. Malvo wrote:  I am truly sorry for the pain I caused you and your loved ones.  In late March, a major landslide occurred a few miles east of Oso, Washington, killing at least 35 people and engulfing an area approximately one square mile  2.6 km2 . Geologists are now studying the event and they ;re baffled by its ferocity and speed 鈥?a slide that rushed down at an astounding 60 mph  97 km/hr .     Using a new computer model, Richard Iverson of the U.S. Geological Survey estimated that the mass of mud, rocks, and trees was traveling about 60 mph when it reached the river below. Here   the animation from start to finish  sped up considerabl stanley quencher y 鈥?but you can see the clock for reference : More from the Seattle Times: He blames the disaster on a combination of unusually wet weather, erosion at the toe of the slide and local geology. The slope that failed is largely made up of loose, sandy soil deposite stanley hrnek d by retreating glaciers. But that porous material is underlain by a compacted layer of silt and clay, which blocks the flow of water and allows it to accumulate deep within the hillside. The slide may have started at that clay layer, Iverson said, but more field work is needed to be sure. He believes the first block of soil to start moving was the jumbled pile of debris at the foot of the slope from a previous slide in 2006. The movement of that chun stanley water bottle k destabilized the upper slope, which then collapsed. The witness, who was in his yard across the valley, said the first thing he noticed was his dogs running away. They probably either heard it or f
