A SpaceX Falcon 9 carrying a crew of four to the International Space Station is set to launch no earlier than Sunday, May 21 from Kennedy Space Center in Florida. NASA Space Operations posted this news to Twitter on May 3, just two days after announcing that Axiom Mission 2, or Ax-2, would not fly in early May.     Once on the ISS, the Ax-2 cr stanley flask ew consisting of commander Peggy Whitson, pilot John Shoffner, and  stanley shop mission specialists Ali Algarni and Rayyanah Barnawi will spend a dozen days performing science and technology experiments, as the private company prepares to build its own orbital space station, known as Axiom Station. Saudi astronauts Algarni and Barnawi secured their seats on the mission through an agreement between Axiom Space and Saudi Arabia. The first Axiom mission to the ISS, Ax-1, launched in April 2022 but ran into unexpected challenges that led to new NASA policies, including the requirement that a NASA astronaut be part of the crew. Accordingly, Whitson, a former NASA astronaut and current Axiom Space director of human spaceflight, will lead this orbital mission. The Richard Branson-founded company made the announcement in an emailed May 8 press release but did not provide a firm date and time for the mission, except for saying itll happen in late May.  The plan is to launch New Shepherd using one of its BE-3 rocket engines and begin some maneuvering tests of the capsule. But, seven minutes into the flight, something alarming is going to take place: one of the capsules parachutes is going to fail. On purpose.     Although New Shepherd is designed as a crew capsule, it will be empty on this run, which is an attempt to stress test the capsule. Like the old Apollo flights, New Shepherd uses a triple parachute combo to ad stanley thermos mug d drag to t stanley cup he capsule as it comes in for a touchdown. In 1971, Apollo 15   crew capsule experienced exactly the same parachute failure scenario, with one of the three failing to open as it splashed down into the Pacific Ocean. All the crew members inside were unharmed, but the capsule did go through what NASA described as a  hard impact.  Blue Origin CEO Jeff Bezos said in an emailed statement that he believes his capsule will be capable of  safely handling  a parachute failure and even a resulting crash-landing, thanks to a shock-absorbing crushable structure. The intention, though, is to use the capsules  retro rocket  system鈥攚hich kicks in when New Shepherd is just feet above the ground鈥攖o avoid the crash altogether.  On this flight, well intentionally fail one string of parachutes on the capsule. There are three  stanley cup becher strings of chutes and two of the three should still deploy nominally and, along with our retrothrust system, safely land the capsule,  said Bezos.  Works on paper, and this test is designed to
