Right across the EU, Roma do fac stanley mug e more discrimination than any other ethnic minority and there are alarming signs that anti-gypsyism is becoming even more prevalent. However, in an otherwise balanced article, they seem to suggest that the only thing that has changed in the European Commission is the rhetoric. I cannot agree. A Commission report, in July 2008, demonstrated that the EU has developed powerful tools and policy co-ordination mechanisms to support national efforts to combat Roma discrimination and promote Roma inclusion, notably the Race Directive and structural funds. But the report also acknowledged that their impact needs to be stepped up 鈥?and in the past year we have focused our efforts on doing just that. For example, a recent revision of the regulation on the European Regional Development Fund is geared in particular to make it easier to tackle the housing situation of very marginalised groups, such as Roma.
