After a weekend of announcements, backtracking and confusion, police have issued statements on restrictions that remain in place under COVID-19 prevention measures, and steps their officers will take to enforce the rules.An announcement last Friday April 16 by Premier Doug Ford included significantly enhanced police powers, including the right to arbitrarily stop people on the street or in their vehicles to ascertain whether or not theyre breaking stay at home rules. The premiers comments ignited concerns about infringements of civil liberties and prompted several forces, including Durham police, to issue statements saying they wouldnt be exercising the new powers. Durham police officers will not be conducting random vehicle or pedestrian stops in our community under this new legislation, said the statement, issued Saturday, April 17.
