He was educated in Augusta schools and graduated from Tabor Academy in Massachusetts in 1951, and Bowdoin College in 1955, where he was a member of Zeta Psi fraternity. After service with the U.S. Navy, John began his career with Central Maine Power Co., Waterville, as an engineering assistant.
