Apple will not see any of the health data collected by apps developed with the software framework Apple thinks its new software framework can solve some of the biggest challenges facing medical researchers, including recruiting people for studies and collecting health data more frequently.Called ResearchK

ResearchKit will be released as open source next month and the first five apps are available today, said Jeff Williams, Applersquo senior

Because itrsquo releasing ResearchKit as open source, apps can be developed for mobile platforms other than iOS, such as Android.Apple teamed up with several hospitals to develop the initial apps, said Williams. For example, Massachusetts General Hospital helped create an app for diabetics and Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City worked on an app for asthma patients. The other apps involve studies dealing with cardiovascular disease, breast cancer and Parkinsonrsquo disease. The apps allow smartphone users to participant in medical research experiments. The app for Parkinsonrsquo disease, for example, runs a test that uses a phonersquo gyroscope and accelerator to measure a personrsquo gait. Another test run by the app measures hand tremors by having a person tap on a phonersquo screen. Parkinsonrsquo

Steve Cooper will use commercial applications to reach his goal WASHINGTON mdash; Steve Cooper, CIO at the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, plans to move within the next 18 to 24 months to untangle a spaghetti-like mess of networks and differing data standards to create a single IT infrastructure for his agency, formed earlier this year by the merger of 22 federal agencies.Wersquo;re moving toward one Department of Homeland Security, Cooper said at the E-Gov conference here today. We want to unify and simplify the environment as rapidly as we can.To do so, Cooper said he plans to rely heavily on commercial applications to accomplish what is no simple task. Federal agencies have historically operated autonomously, and their IT systems werenrsquo;t designed to interact with those of other agencies. That pattern has left the d

Business rules, which dictate how data is assembled, collected and accessed, also differ, Lee Holcomb, chief technical officer at the Homeland Security Department, said in an interview.Holcombrsquo job involves devising a plan to make data held b
