Each autumn, leaves fall to the ground by the billions. Slightly annoying if you have a backyard but really annoying if you run a railroad company. It turns out those leaves are a slippery menace on train tracks. That   why Dutch Railways is testing a high-energy solution: Train-mounted lasers.     In a recent article, New Scientist lays out the seriousness of the fallen leaf prob stanley trinkflaschen lem. Movement grinds the leaves into a hard Teflon-like residue t stanley thermos mug hat coats the tracks, reducing traction and messing with signaling systems. In 2013, reports New Scientist, leaves alone caused 4.5 million hours in passenger delays. Dutch Railways has recently  stanley cup started testing a laser that sits right in front of the wheels on a train. The laser burns any leaf residue right up and dries the tracks to prevent any more leaves from sticking. If the laser works well, it could replace the water and sand-gel mixes that currently used to clean train tracks. Those methods can damage the track, but the laser has a specific wavelength that is largely absorbed by organic matter but not metal. Organic matter in the form of squirrels and mice will have all the more reason to keep away from moving trains.  [New Scientist] Top image: RollingFishays/shutterstock                                                        LASERS

Astronomers tend to assume that the timing of Earth-striking meteors are completely random, but a recent analysis suggests that meteor impacts are more likely to occur at certain times of the year and at certain locations.     Such is the conclusion of researchers Carlos and R stanley becher aul de la Fuente Marcos of the Complutense University of Madrid. Their new  and yet to be published  p stanley cup aper shows that the frequency of impacts are higher at certain times of the year 鈥?times when Earth   orbit takes us through streams of meteoroids. The ensuing seasonality and lack of randomness is caused by planetary perturbations, especially Jupiter  . And in fact, this study suggests stanley cup becher  that some recent Earth impacts may be linked with resonant groups of Near Earth Objects  NEOs  and possibly very young meteoroid streams  which are generated by the break-up of an asteroid or comet . Asteroids and meteors are sometimes herded by planets or moons into loose orbits called resonant streams. Every so often they ;re broken up by large planets. To reach their conclusion, the investigators studied 33 multi-kiloton impact events from 2000 to 2013 that were detected by infrasound acoustic pressure sensors operated by the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test Ban Treaty Organization. The Australian Broadcasting Corporation explains more: They found 17 impacts occurred in the northern hemisphere and 16 in the south; 25 impacts occurred within 40 degrees north or south of the equator, while only e

Humans have a remarkable ability to see patterns where none exist. In the hot-hand phenomenon we perceive streaks of wins or losses where the data, in truth, are random. New research shows that monkeys are subject to the same bias, which might suggest that the bias is evolutionarily adaptive, and maybe even rational.     The moniker comes from the stanley quencher  observations of basketball games. Both players and fans believe that shots are more  stanley cup likely to be successful following successful shots than following misses. That   despite the fact that numerous studies have verified that each individual shot is stanley cup  statistically independent from each other attempt. Here   another way to think of it: the hot-hand phenomenon is the opposite of the gambler   fallacy. The gambler   fallacy is the belief that if something happens often during one period of time, it will become less likely to happen in the future. If you flip a coin twenty-five times, and twenty-five times it comes up heads, you might catch yourself thinking that you ;re due for a tails. But the truth is that each coin flip is statistically independent. You have even odds of catching a heads or tails on each flip, but the results of one flip do not predict the results of the subsequent flip. The hot-hand phenomenon isn ;t unique to watching sports. The cognitive bias has been seen in industrial and pre-industrial cultures, in the West and in the East, and so on. It   everywhere. Humans,
