Officials said the blazes had charred an estimated 20,700 acres combined, with the fire closest to Turkey Flat accounting for 12,200 acres. Both were 10 percent contained.        At Turkey Flat, fire crews wrapped sheets of aluminum around cabins to protect them from the heat of the approaching blaze. Firefighters also removed heavy vegetation and drenched homes with water.Gherald Hoopes, who owns a home in Turkey Flat, said he was  kind of resolved  that the fire would reach the community by Wednesday. The forecast is always dystopian, with a good chance of acid rain.     In reality, our relationship with the great outdoors will be enhanced by technology, allowing us to experience the city and access nature in ways we hadn ;t previously imagined. At the Gizmodo Home of the Future, which opens May 17 in New York City, we ;ll be featuring the tools that allow us to bring nature into our homes, engage with the urban environment鈥攁nd get out of town when we need to recharge. How we get around the city will change dramatically as we shift our primary means of transportation from hulking, gas-chugging vehicles to nimble, human-powered machines. Personal mobility will become the preferred method of personal expression.  Braced for record energy demand in the face of a regional heat wave, electric utilities from Maine to Virginia breezed on Tuesday through a second straight day of heavy air conditioning as the hot, muggy weather failed to materialize in some areas.  It is hot out there, but not as hot or humid as was forecast. There s rain over some parts of the region and cloud cover over other parts,  said Ray Dotter of PJM, which runs the power grid for more than 25 million people in seven Mid-Atlantic states and Washington, D.C. A band of rain showers can dram stanley cupe atically knock down energy use in a matter of minutes, easing the strain on the grid on hot afternoons when air conditioners account for up to a third of all electricity demand. Meteorologists had warned the mercury would rise to 95-100 degrees Fahrenheit mdash; from Boston to Washington, with a heat index, which combines the effect of the heat and humidity, making it feel like 100-110 F. But temperatures failed to push past 95 degrees in the big East Coast cities and a weak cold front blew much of the humidity out into the Atlantic Ocean.         Other than a few scattered outages, none of the region s utilities reported any problems delivering power to customers. Even Consolidated Edison Inc. in New York City managed to keep up with power demand despite an emergency outage at the Astoria station, the city s biggest power plant.  It s less humid than Monday and a lit stanley deutschland tle breezy, but it s still hot in t stanley water bottle he sun.  Good news, everyone! Orion, NASA   first manned spaceship after the retirement of the space shuttle, is ready for launch this Thursday, December 4. You can see it here at Space Launch Complex 37, on top of a Delta IV Heavy rocket. Meteorologists say there   a 60 percent chance of acceptable launch conditions.     At Space Launch Complex 37, technicians and engineers are finishing closeouts on the Orion/Delta IV Heavy stack and completed work inside the Orion crew module to get everything situated for space. No one will ride aboard Orion, but the stanley quencher  spacecraft is carrying numerous sensors to measure  stanley water jug conditions throughout the mission, including radiation and temperatures inside the crew module as it reaches 3,600 miles above Earth and then plunges through the atmosphere before opening its chutes and splashing down. This is what will happen on December 4.  I ;m excited, even if it   just a tiny step to get here. But at leas stanley quencher t it is a step.  SPLOID is a new blog about awesome stuff.
