in air pollution, the U.S. is backsliding. And that means more people are dying prematurely, according to new research. The paper authors dont point to a specific reason why the increase happened, but the numbers are clear that it occurred under the presidency of Donald Trump. A team of economists at Carnegie Mellon University published their working paper Monday with the National Bureau of Economic Research. The paper is not peer-reviewed, but the authors wanted to get it out quickly because the results were so striking. Between 2009 and 2016, the annual average of air pollution from fine particulate matter decreased by more than 24 percent. From 2016 to 2018, however, the rate increased by more than 5 percent and the rise resulted in Americans dying.

What youre seeing is no ordinary plate. Its supported by titanium micro-heaters and its covered with a pool of liquid. The heaters are used to heat up small spots on the plate. The heat radiates through the pool of liquid until it gets to a single droplet of silicon-based liquid鈥攃hosen because it wont mix with the liquid already on the plate. What happens then depends on the shape of the droplet. Lens-shaped droplets will be boosted away
stanley cup from the hot spot, but more spherical droplets will slowly slide towards the source of heat. The mechanism that drives it is called thermocapillary migration. Capillary action鈥攖he tendency of liquid to adhere to the walls of certain containers coupled with the tendency of liquid molecules to stick together鈥攊s responsible for getting water from the root of a tree to its branches, as well as drawing liquid up the fibers of a paintbrush. Now its being used more selectively. This isnt the first time that researchers have used thermocapillary migration. Scientists have been able to steer droplets around an exposed plate, but the liquid covering this plate allows them to do it with less of a temperature fluctuation and more speed.
