The shooting happened in the 700 block of Vermont Street about 5:10 p.m.Police identified a suspect as Nicholas Beaver, 32, of Topeka, around 9:45 p.m. Wednesday night. Around 10:15 p.m., LKPD updated their social media to say Beaver was taken into custody. Beaver was booked into the Douglas County Jail on Wednesday for second-degree murder, according to a booking log. He was arrested at W 6th and Michigan streets, which is less than a mile from the crime scene, per the log. Beaver was booked without bond.
