Consumers gobbled up bargains from U.S. retailers over the crucial Thanksgiving holiday shopping weekend, but sales growth was curbed and mall traffic hurt by worries about the gloomy economy and fallout from the Sept. 11 attacks.Check acceptance company TeleCheck Services Inc. said sales at retail stores that have been open at least a year rose 2.3 percent in the three days following Thanksgiving. That figure topped the company s forecast for seasonal growth of 2 percent, but fell short of last year s gain of 3.8 percent. Sales in November and December can account for as much as one-quarter of a retailer s annual sales, while sales in the weekend following Thanksgiving make up only about 10 percent of total holiday sales. Foot traffic at shopping malls on Friday, Saturday and Sunday fell 7.4 percent from 2000, while the number of people shopping in department stores fell by 11.7 percent, according to Chicago-based RCT Systems, which tracks such data for retailers.Another, less-comprehensive reading comes from the International Council of Shopping Centers. The group says sales dropped 1.5 percent at the nation s malls. The report tracks sales at more than 4,000 specialty stores in 80 regional malls. The purpose here is to provide an open source, online platform where users can be involved in the creative process, taking control of parts of the design, customizing the furniture, and sharing their ideas.
