The U.S. economy is in a recession, according to a panel of economists that is considered the official arbiter of the nation s business cycles.The National Bureau of Economic Research said the economy entered a recession last March, the month in which the longest expansion in U.S. history celebrated its 10th anniversary.The committee, composed of academic economists from Harvard, Stanford and other prestigious universities, said the U.S. might have escaped a recession were it not for the Sept. 11 attacks.
