Six months after the rig explosion that led to the largest offshore oil spill in U.S. history, damage to the Gulf of Mexico can be measured more in increments than extinctions, say scientists polled by The Associated Press. In an informal survey, 35 researchers who study the Gulf lowered their rating of its ecological health by several points, compared to their assessment before the BP well gushed millions of gallons of oil. But the drop in grade wasn t dramatic. On a scale of 0 to 100, the overall average grade for the oiled Gulf was 65 - down from 71 before the spill.EDITOR S NOTE: It will take time to see the full effects of the largest offshore oil spill in U.S. history. In the second of an Associated Press occasional series, scientists grade the ecological health of the stanley becher  Gulf of Mexico. This reflects scientists  views that the spilled 172 million gallons of oil further eroded what was already a beleaguered body stanley uk  of water - tainted for years by farm runoff from the Mississippi River, overfishing, and oil from smaller spills and natural seepage. Nor is it the glancing strike that some relieved experts and officials said it was in midsummer. It is like a concussion,  said Larry McKinney, who heads the Gulf of Mexico research center at Texas AM University-Corpus Christi.  We got hit hard and we certainly are seeing some symptoms of it.  The NASA IceBridge mission has been going on for 4 years, measuring ice thickness using LiDAR. Along with the usual assortment of stunning ice-photography, last week had a delightful surprise: a g stanley water bottle iant inflatable polar bear.     The inflatable mascot took shelter in the mission   ha stanley thermobecher ngar to dry out on the morning of March 19th. Later in the day, the Icebridge survey flight captured a photogr stanley cup aph of the Brooks Range during a survey between Thule, Greenland to Fairbanks, Alaska. How exactly is NASA using LiDAR to measure sea ice and glacier thickness  LiDAR is a technique for bouncing different wavelengths of light off of a surface to measure distances. Shorter wavelength lasers are used to detect the surface elevation of snow or ice, while longer wavelength radar penetrates into the ice to map bedrock below. Here   a quick unnarrated animation giving the general premise:  We ;ve previously covered the Icebridge, including some of the beautiful images coming out of the mission. https://gizmodo/our-clearest-view-yet-of-antarctica-stripped-of-all-its-511636795 https://gizmodo/take-a-breathtaking-birds-eye-tour-of-greenland-and-th-1171537846 Image credit: NASA/Michael Studinger Update: The polar bear works as a mascot for the University of Alaska-Fairbanks hockey team, the Nanooks.
